Braunschweiger Straße
Apartment renovation Berlin
Completion 2020
Apartment renovation Braunschweiger Str. The overarching theme of this apartment renovation is a blend of Scandinavian modernism and Berlin Altbau charm: preserving the original features wherever possible, while introducing new elements in a modern, slightly playful style. The old kitchen and narrow, tube-shaped bathroom were reconfigured to create a new internal bathroom, separated by fixed glazing to allow natural light to flow in from the open kitchen opposite.
Walls are painted in matte pastel tones, which—together with untreated, white-soaped wooden floors—give the space a soft, calm atmosphere.
Repeated pinewood details, such as the built-in shelving in the living room and newly installed window sills, are treated in a way that preserves their light tone over time.
The large Belfast porcelain sink is placed beneath the kitchen countertop for a robust and clean-lined look. Jade green Cinca mosaic tiles complement the grey terrazzo floor in the bathroom.
In the hallway, a custom-built cabinet hides the washing machine and storage behind perforated doors—ventilated through a pattern inspired by traditional wallpaper.
