Rotsidan

Ateljéhus Northern Sweden

Planned completion 2026

Rotsidan is a protected stretch of coastline in northern Sweden, in the region known as the High Coast. Just a few hundred meters inland, on a forested plot, I’ve designed a small studio house built entirely from locally sourced, untreated pine. The idea is for the compact, robust house to gradually weather and turn grey, blending into the rocky and rugged landscape over time. To achieve this, all facades — including the roof — are clad with wooden planks. An old technique is used on the roof, where milled channels in the boards help divert any rainwater that penetrates between them.

To minimize impact on the surrounding nature, the house rests on reinforced concrete plinths placed directly on the exposed bedrock.

Its simple, triangular form includes shutters over the windows and doors, allowing it to be sealed during harsh autumn and winter conditions. A steeply sloped roof directs snow and rain to the rear, while the broad north-facing surface protects the house from the intense summer sun. In spring and summer, the shutters and foldable sunshades over the south-facing wooden deck can be opened, allowing light and air to flow through while creating shade and comfort in warmer months.

The project is currently under construction and is planned for completion in summer 2026.
